Výlet do Berlína

Centrum a nikde nikdo.

Hypnotizovaná studentka "přicházela k vánočnímu stromku" s široce otevřenýma očima a rozzářeným úsměvem malého dítěte. Na berlínském koncertě to bylo podobné.

Islaja A TRIP TO BERLIN
translated by Lukáš Houdek

I went on a trip to Berlin and it was a successful trip. I first visited the German metropolis sixteen years ago and back then it was a dead city. City centre and not a person in sight. Had everybody gone out of East Berlin? Are they on holiday? It was quite a shock for me, even more so as I had just been returning from the very vibrant Amsterdam. This time, everything was different. Berlin is a multicultural cauldron and if it failed to compare even with Prague in my mind back then, now it was the exact opposite. Unlike our capital, which has become a city of gold diggers searching for every possible plot of land yet to be exploited, the German city offers a lot of space for people, space for living. Even in the centre you chance upon places, which could only exist here in small-town suburbs, and even then only as exceptions.

I did not travel five hundred kilometres, however, merely to judge the situation in Germany. The main reason of my journey, and its satisfying outcome, was a gig by Islaja. Other performers included the stompbox instrumentalist ,Guido Möbius fairly well known in Bohemia, and the thereminist Dorit Chrysler. I do think, though, that the concert really belonged to Islaja, no matter how impressive Möbius had been. Dorit Chrysler wasn’t quite herself that night, but given the fact that it was approaching 3 a.m. I was not really surprised. The concert did not start until after midnight – the Berliners are said to be up all the time. I first encountered Islaja’s work some two years ago and was left standing agape. This agapeness occurred when I was confronted with a video for the song Rohkaisulaulu (yes, she is a Fin singing in Finnish). If I had had the initial visual idea, I would have been more than satisfied, and the music was almost exactly like the music I had anticipated and coveted somewhere in my head, only better. Since then on I followed her work, grew to like it and waited for an opportunity to see her performing somewhere nearby, which finally presented itself. I felt like I knew what I could expect from the gig and was very much mistaken. I was left standing agape once again. I guess there is not much point in focusing on the characterisation of her music here, and the fact that vocally it had been a fantastic performance was, indeed, not the most important thing for me. Such attitude in describing a concert is probably quite unexpected, and yet justified. How? During a performance the listener usually perceives e.g. the performer’s absorption, pathos or nervousness. Islaja’s deep submersion in what she was doing, however, had left no space for any other perception. The absolute and uninterrupted harmony between the performer and the performance eventually led me to the conclusion that for long time (if indeed at all) had I seen so much of a human being. Too abstract? I can illustrate it with an example from elsewhere: a friend of mine was once telling me about a hypnosis session she witnessed as part of her studies of medicine. The hypnotised student was "approaching a Christmas tree" with her eyes opened wide and the gleaming smile of a little child. What I saw at the Berlin performance was very much like that.
